CYCLOGYRO – THE MOST AGILE PROPULSION SYSTEM IN AVIATION

The core of the drive concept was established by Ernst Schneider and the Voith GmbH technology group nearly 100 years ago, and patented as the Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP). The drive provides high maneuverability, and ships equipped with two or more VSP can move in nearly every direction or perform a stationary turn.

Because of its agility and flexibility, there have been myriad unsuccessful attempts to bring the VSP to the aviation industry – but only CycloTech has succeeded.

CycloTech’s patented technology is currently the only Cyclogyro rotor concept worldwide that can rotate at high speed and efficiently deliver sufficient thrust for a truly competitive alternative aircraft propulsion.

COMBINING THE BENEFITS OF ROTORCRAFT
AND FIXED-WING CONCEPTS

The Cyclogyro technology combines the main benefits of rotorcraft and fixed-wing concepts and therefore its unique selling proposition (USP) has three main components

  1. VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing), and agile maneuverability
  2. Increased efficiency in forward flight mode
  3. Compact design and reduced infrastructure demand (for example in urban areas)


A Cyclogyro-Rotor has several wings rotating around a central rotation axis at constant speed. These wings are connected to a freely rotating hub via conrods.


An eccentric position of the hub causes a periodic change of the pitch angle of attack of a wing during one revolution, thereby generating accelerated airflow and creating thrust.


The distance between the two rotation axes (d) determines the thrust magnitude and the position of the hub in peripheral direction (φ) determines the thrust direction.


CycloTech’s unique control system enables precise positioning of the hub within fractions of a second – 360° around the rotation axis – making the Cyclogyro rotor the most agile propulsion system.

EXTREME CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS FOR LIGHTWEIGHT INFRASTRUCTURE

The major challenge of using the Cyclogyro rotor technology in air instead of water is the far higher revolutions per minute required to create sufficient thrust for aviation applications.

This results in extreme lightweight construction requirements for highly stressed rotor components and demands new concepts, advanced composite material and innovative processing methods. CycloTech faced the challenge – and found the perfect solution. The Cyclogyro rotor technology is a clear ground-breaking innovation for VTOL and urban air mobility.

Over the last three years CycloTech developed and tested nine different rotor prototypes, giving us the largest database and broadest experience in this field worldwide.

Comprehensive wind tunnel tests proved a significant performance increase in forward flight. These results have been predicted through the CFD simulations.

The prototype will undergo one more optimization loop with minor changes to increase the thrust and enhance the lightweight construction. Further scaling of the rotor size will lead to a significant increase of the thrust/weight ratio.

Early 2020 we will be able to test the final configuration for its use in the flight demonstrator of approximately 80kg.

By the end of 2020 CycloTech will be ready to fly the demonstrator proving the agility and advantages of the technology.

We will also be ready to customize the Cyclogyro rotors for specific applications or aircraft, for example for customers providing urban air mobility solutions.
